SPIRITUAL DIRECTION

Spiritual direction is about having a companion to walk with you as you explore your spiritual journey. It’s a space to pause, talk, pray, and pay attention to where God is at work in your life. You’ll meet about once a month to reflect, engage in different spiritual practices, and get curious together about what God might be saying or inviting you into. It’s a safe, intentional space to listen together for how God is moving and how you might respond.

Do you have a desire to move forward in your relationship with God? To understand how He is at work and to be able to hear His voice? Are you feeling stressed or burned out, tired of doing life as usual? Do you have nagging questions that just won't go away? Are you feeling held back or blocked in your relationship with God or in your calling? Or do you want to learn to live out your Christianity more authentically? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then spiritual direction is for you.

A spiritual direction session lasts about an hour. We will start with prayer, inviting the Holy Spirit to lead our time together. We'll talk a bit about what is happening in your life and what your concerns are. From there, we will engage in a spiritual practice that is relevant to your situation. These practices may include various kinds of prayer, scripture, journaling, drawing, listening to God together, and a variety of other practices. You will have the opportunity to slow down, listen, ponder what God is inviting you into, and gain insights and direction from Him.

The term "spiritual director" is a bit of a misnomer, because the Holy Spirit is actually the One who provides direction. The spiritual director creates space for you to connect with God and hear from Him, and assists you on that journey.

Counseling tends to focus on problems and solutions, and involves asking questions and delving into your life experiences and emotions through conversation. Spiritual Direction is focused on the work of God in your life and assisting you to bring your situations and concerns to Him and discover the richness of engaging with God on a deep level and experiencing His heart toward you.

Starting in 2014, I have engaged in monthly sessions with my spiritual director. I found it to be an enormously beneficial investment of my time and resources. My Director walked me through seasons of deep pain and trauma, as well as through seasons of readiness for growth and change. Meeting with her taught me to engage with God in all seasons of my life and experience, and, honestly, kept me sane through extremely difficult times. As I began to realize that I was stepping into a new season of growth and thriving, I wanted to pass on to others what my Director had given to me. So I enrolled in and completed Denver Seminary's Spiritual Direction Certificate program. Now it is my joy and privilege, while continuing to see my Director for my own growth and engagement with God, to walk alongside others on the journey as well.
